Protein is the primary nutrient group involved in repairing and building muscle tissues. It is also the only nutrient group that contains an appreciable amount of nitrogen. This is important since the body must be in a state of positive nitrogen balance in order for muscle growth to take place. On the flip side, negative nitrogen balance can cause the body to break down muscle tissue as a source of protein for other uses, resulting in decreased muscle mass. While any source of protein can provide protein, whey protein has some distinct advantages.
Benefits of Whey Protein
Whey is a valuable by-product of cheese manufacturing because it contains a complete amino acid profile as well as other beneficial factors such as alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, glycomacropeptide, lactoferrin, serum albumin, lysozyme, and immunoglobulins A, G, and M. Whey protein also tends to provide a higher concentration of essential amino acids than other protein sources.
Typically, about 25% of the amino acids in whey are branched chain amino acids (BCAAs). BCAAs are readily oxidized as an energy source during and after stress and exercise.
Whey protein is also rich in cysteine, a precursor to the vital intracellular antioxidant glutathione (GSH). GSH is depleted by oxidative stress that occurs during exercise, immune defense, and healing. In fact, some researchers think that whey protein may help play a role in promoting immune health by providing GSH precursors and increasing levels of GSH in the tissues.
HCActive™ is a unique potassium-magnesium stabilized form of (–)-hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that is protected by nine issued US Patents and multiple pending patents. It is used for weight loss and other purposes and is an extract of the active component of Garcinia cambogia, one of several closely related Garcinia species from the plant family known as Guttiferae. The organic acid known as (–)-hydroxycitric acid, i.e., HCA, is the primary acid found in the fruit and the rinds of G. cambogia, G. atroviridis and G. indica. In G. cambogia, from 10 to (rarely) 30% of the weight of the dried pericarp (rind) is HCA.
Mechanisms of Action
HCA first was studied in relation to weight gain, especially weight gain from the consumption of too many calories from carbohydrates.
Whenever the rate of cellular carbohydrate availability (as glucose via glycolysis) exceeds energy requirements and/or the capacity to produce and store glycogen, the resulting acetyl-CoA units derived from carbohydrates are turned into fatty acids and cholesterol. HCA inhibits the synthesis of fat from carbohydrates by inhibiting the enzyme ATP:citrate-lyase.
The process of making fat from carbohydrate slows or even significantly inhibits the ability to oxidize stored fats for energy. In contrast, HCA disinhibits the ability to use fats for fuel.
In athletes, HCA may improve the rate of metabolism of fatty acids for energy within less than a week. In untrained men and women, HCA also increases the rate of fatty acid oxidation during moderate exercise.
Athletes and weekend warriors alike are benefitted by the ability of HCA to speed recovery after workouts and increase glycogen stores.
HCActive™ in 3 different pilot clinical trials using different forms of delivery has demonstrated weight loss benefits ranging from approximately a pound per week to greater than three pounds per week in morbidly obese test subjects. Various HCA salts have been clinically tested for weight loss and weight loss in the more successful studies usually averaged a little more than one pound a week.
However, the weight loss results have varied widely from study-to-study with calcium- and potassium-calcium-based HCA salts and even with the same HCA salt in different studies. Major authorities blame the poor bioavailability of commercial calcium and potassium-calcium HCA salts for these failings.

Artificial or natural sweeteners: which one is the best choice?
For several decadese, there's a disturbing trend in which the majority of the population has gained weight as a result of overeating and/or underexercising.
Most experts agree on how a big part of the over consumption is caused by ever larger portion sizes of junkfood. Junkfood is very cheap to make, as it can be stored for such a long period of time and lacks in the most expensive macro nutrient: protein. It also has virtually zero micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals and most of all, the precious antioxidants we derive from vegetables and fruits.
An ongoing discussion is how to stimulate lower calorie intake as well as making exercise more attractive.
Do we guide the general public by offering colour codes, in which green colour signifies the 'right' choice and a red colour the 'wrong' one, whatever the guidance may be. Don't get me started either on fake margarine being promoted and real butter and coconut oil being damned as 'evil saturated fats'.
Or do we punish the industry by banning over-sized junkfood? It isn't even so long ago when the standard sized bottle of lemonade was 'only' 1 litre or less! Now 2 litres is quickly becoming the norm.
A few weeks ago the Dutch government published her decision to stimulate the choice for lower- and zero calorie drinks by lowering the taxation on mineral water as well as that of artificially sweetened soft drinks.
In the light of the upcoming 50% increase of taxation on all foods from 6% to 9% as of January 1, 2019, the majority of people was outraged!
How is it possible outright beneficial health foods such as vegetables and fruits aren't subsidized and get 0% taxation?
A lot of people stipulated how artificial sweeteners are not good for your health, while others reassuringly sussed these complaints, stating that e.g. aspartame has been researched for decades and barely any negative side-effects have been reported.
Hence why we are on a quest to find out more about low-glycemic low-caloric sweeteners. Are they good substitutes for real sugar?
Losing weight in a healthy wayMost of us have made at least one resolution for the new year and for many that will be to lose weight as well as eating more healthily and exercise more often.
While it is great to be able to fit back into that awesome pair of trousers that has become too tight, eating healthily should be your top prioritiy.
That is because eating healthily means you are paying attention to what you feed your body, rather than you simply fill it with empty calories.
The unofficial history of sports supplements in the USA - Part IThis is a story that had to be told. As most everyone who's been involved with bodybuilding for any appreciable amount of time knows, the business of supplements has a history fraught with deceit and deception. The very term "snake oil," a colloquial expression used to describe any fraudulent product, stems from the days of the traveling salesman of the nineteenth century who sold "tonics" and "elixirs" to gullible townsfolk with the promise of increased vigor and vitality. The marketing strategies of today's hucksters may be more sophisticated, but the message is the same:
If you want more ___________ [fill in the blank...muscle, hair, stamina, sex], then buy this product!
Why should I care about meal frequency? Why should I care about eating several times a day? A straight answer is, because it works!
It works if you wish to burn fat and maintain a good muscular attractive physique when you are over 40. Back in 2009 I was pretty darn fit and strong and in the best shape of my life while eating small meals five to six times a day and working out right after work around 7pm.
